Key Term(s)

  • Discourse Communities and / or Activity Systems

  • Research as Learning / Information Literacy

Discovery Log Workshop

Today's session is over Discovery Log #8. For the template, click here.

Based on the work you did for your last Discovery Log, work on adding to the template above by using one of the sources you found.  If you did not find a source, ask me for help!

Reading Group Discussions

ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy (located in Blackboard>Readings)

  • Information Creation as a Process (p. 5)

  • Information Has Value (p. 6)

In groups of 4, identify key points from the Knowledge Practices and Dispositions and make connections to what you experienced working on Discovery Log #8.

Research Cheatsheet

For the Research Cheatsheet, click here.

  • Take a look at the cheatsheet,

    • How can this help with our Discovery Logs?

    • What are some things we can do to integrate these types of questions?

    • Where in the template do you think you could add your responses?

Homework

a) Complete Discovery Log Entry #8.

b) We will have a Portfolio check on Friday.  I will be checking your online folders where you should have all the work you have done for this class. (Warm Up; Reading Responses; Reflections; Discovery Log entries; etc.) If you have been adding to online folders regularly, great! If not, make sure to get your folders organized!

c) Work on putting together another Learning Outcome.  This does not have to be completed just yet  so I am leaving it up to you to decide how much work you want to put into this.  We will be having another Portfolio Practice workshop on Friday, so be sure to put in the effort! For the process we went through for the first Learning Outcome, click here.

d) Read through the Portfolio explanation. Click here to access it.  Even if you have looked at it before, look it over AGAIN! I want you to have a refresher for Friday's class. Now that you have had a couple of practice sessions, looking over the descriptions again will help you to understand what is expected. We will be discussing this as a class on Friday, so if no one has questions/concerns, I will assume that everyone understands the expectations and the work needed for your midterm.
