Today's Goals

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate their ability to locate, read, evaluate, select and use (integrate) effectively information from appropriate sources with their own ideas

Key Terms

  • Research as Learning / Information Literacy

  • Reflection, metacognition, transfer/expansion

Habits of Mind

  • Persistence is fostered when writers are encouraged to commit to exploring, in writing, a topic, idea, or demanding task.

  • Curiosity is fostered when writers are encouraged to conduct research using methods for investigating questions appropriate to the discipline.

Warm Up

On your running document for Warm Up's, respond to the following:

  • Thinking of the themes: race, class, and/or gender:

    • What are you interested in?

    • What are you passionate about?

    • What pisses you off?

    • What are you interested in researching this semester?

  • Think outside the box...these themes are present in many diverse ways in society. Do not just stick to the typical connections. You need to really be invested in this!

If you are not sure to answer some of these, do not worry! That is why we are working on the Discovery Log in class. Try your best to see what information you have.

Reading Discussion

Readings:

  • Naming What We Know Threshold Concept 4.0 "All Writers Have More to Learn"

  • Naming What We Know Threshold Concept 4.2 "Failure Can Be an Important"

Each group needs to discuss the importance of their assigned sections. Pick at least one quote and example to discuss with the class. Add group notes to the Google running document!

Group B: NWWK 4.0 Discuss paragraphs 4-6

Group C: NWWK 4.0 Discuss last 3 paragraphs

Think of how this connects to our previous reading discussions...

Discovery Log #3 Workshop

Spend the rest of class working on your Discovery Log based on the warm up you worked on today.

  • You can find any sources you like!

  • Be sure that you are interested in what you are researching! If you aren't then I don't want to see it...

  • Think sociologically....there are so many troubles that can be linked to sociology. See what I did there?  (hint: you all know this because you just did an exam and a major assignment practicing this!)
