  • Step 2: In your browser, head to the site: kahoot.it

  • Step 3: Enter the pin number that is on the screen in the front of the room

  • Step 6: Begin the quiz game! You can use notes and work together....

Reading Discussion

A. Some examples from past semesters...

B. On the Google running document for reading discussions, write notes for our discussion. Be sure to summarize/explain your group's section, pick a quote to support the explanation, and figure out an example!

In your groups, assign the following roles:

  • speaker

  • writer

  • researcher

  • support

Discuss the following:

  • Group A: Preface â€‹

  • Group B: Last paragraph on page 2

  • Group C: Metaconcept (pg. 15)

  • Group D: Metaconcept (pg. 16)

  • Group E: Threshold Concepts explanation found under "Assignments & Due Dates"

Make sure to take notes for our class discussion. Pick a speaker for your group to discuss what your group talked about and the specific areas in the text. However, I will call randomly on people!

  • Did you have to reread, highlight, look up anything?

  • What did you do to overcome any obstacles you had while doing the reading? What worked and what didn't? What do you need to do for the next reading?

C. Reading Response

  • How do we do this?

  • Where do I turn it in?

  • Can you find the Reading Response page?

  • Do you know how to use the memo template?

  • Do you really have to discuss ALL the concepts?

  • What is the late work policy?

  • Past examples of a Reading Response?

Workshop

Next thing is...

Discovery Log!

For today's class, you will be working on your first Discovery Log entry. Head to Blackboard>Readings and Templates>Templates>Discovery Log Template.

NOTE: We have a new Discovery Log template!

Copy and past the template 2x on your Discovery Log running document (in your online folder).

Leave the first entry blank. Start with the second pasted template. For this entry, focus on who you are and/or where you come from. In the simplest form, research your ancestry! Use this as an opportunity to find out more about your ancestry and your identities.

Take your time and just go line by line. You can use which ever resources from the Internet that you like. Be sure to find a couple of sources.

Homework

a) Read (due by 9/4 class )

  1. "Naming What We Know" Threshold Concept 1.0

  2. "Framework for Information Literacy's" Introduction (pg. 2-3)

b) Looking Ahead â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

  • Reading Response #1 (due 9/1 by midnight)

  • Continue to familiarize yourself with the class web page and syllabus!

  • Discovery Log #1 (due 9/1 by midnight)

  • Introductory Letter (due 9/4 by class time)

    • Complete your letter introducing yourself to me and your peers. This is a low-stakes informal piece of writing and will be a part of your engagement and participation grades for this class. So, don't stress about this assignment, but complete it to the best of your abilities and make sure that you are always putting your best foot forward. It is mostly a way for me to get to know you, and a way for me to gauge your goals, understandings, beliefs, and opinions about writing and history. â€‹

      • This letter should cover 3 subjects:

        • Information introducing and describing yourself,

        • Your understanding of what writing is, what research is, and what past experiences you have had with writing and research (positive, negative, etc.).

        • Your understanding of what history is and what your past experiences with history.
