Today's Goals

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate their ability to collaborate effectively as members of diverse teams / groups of writers

  • Evaluate the ways in which they have become a more reflective (mindful, self-aware, thoughtful) writer.

Key Terms:

  • Research as Learning / Information Literacy

  • Reflection, metacognition, transfer/expansion

Habits of Mind:

  • Engagement is fostered when writers are encouraged to make connections between their own ideas and those of others.

  • Curiosity is fostered when writers are encouraged to conduct research using methods for investigating questions appropriate to the discipline

On your running document for Warm Up's, respond to the following:

  • In which ways has does the NWWK TC 1.0, "Writing is a Social & Rhetorical Activity," support the readings/discussions you are having in either Sociology and/or Spanish?

Warm Up

Reading Discussion

Readings:

  1. Naming What We Know Threshold Concept 1.0

  2. Framework for Information Literacy's "Introduction"

Groups:

Each group needs to discuss the importance of their assigned sections. Pick at least one quote and example to discuss with the class. For the example, try to connect the section your group is discussing to something you have, or are, reading for Sociology or Spanish! Add group notes to the Google running document!

  • Group A: NWWK Discuss first two paragraphs

  • Group B: NWWK Discuss paragraphs 3&4

  • Group C: NWWK Discuss paragraphs 5&6

  • Group D: FIL First paragraph

  • Group E: FIL Second paragraph

What do we mean by rhetorical situation?

How does this add to our conversation from Wednesday on Metaconcept and Threshold Concepts?

Discovery Log #1 Workshop

A. Be sure to copy and past the NEW Discovery Log template...

  • I made some adjustments to the template.

    • Copy and past the template 2x on your Discovery Log running document (in your online folder).

B. Next thing is...

  • For today's class, you will be working on your first Discovery Log entry. Head to Blackboard>Readings and Templates>Templates>Discovery Log Template.

Leave the first entry blank. Start with the second pasted template. For this entry, focus on who you are and/or where you come from. In the simplest form, research your ancestry! Use this as an opportunity to find out more about your ancestry and your identities.

Take your time and just go line by line. You can use which ever resources from the Internet that you like. Be sure to find a couple of sources.
