Overview: Your overall performance at First Year Symposium (FYS) is evaluated based on the following elements: a trifold, PowerPoint, and an oral presentation. The trifold and PowerPoint will count for the group, but each student will be assessed based on their individual performance within the group presentation. While presentations will be completed and graded prior to FYS, students must attend and present at First Year Symposium to receive credit for the assignment.

Presentation Dates

  • Graded Presentations: November 14th – November 19th

    • Everyone should be prepared to go on the first day.

  • First Year Symposium: Thursday, November 21

    • We will sign up for times!

Presentation Components

  • Trifold

    • Typically used as an attention getting device; can contain moderate information but most content is reserved for the PowerPoint or the oral presentation.

    • Emphasis on Visual Rhetoric: Choices of color, image, etc. designed to help convey your ideas/themes to your audience.

    • You will create an accurate template for this trifold and peer review this template in your Writing and Rhetoric class.

  • PowerPoint

    • Similar to Dr. Araiza’s PPTs (inclusion of images, research,  and general outline material)

    • Follows basic PPT guidelines: limited text, solid design…possibly echoes the design elements of the Trifold.

    • Please use the template that you have been provided as a starting point for your own group’s PPT

    • Should contain evidence of research

  • Oral Presentation

    • Each group gives one presentation linked by a common theme

    • Clear group introduction and lead in to the first person’s material, transition, second person’s material, transition, etc. PPT concludes. Should contain References slides.

    • Research is present in the PPT and referenced as part of the oral presentation

    • General etiquette for presentation is observed
