History Exam Prep-Essays

Part A

  • Get into groups based on the letter I assign you!

Part B

  • Work on collaborating on the Google Doc I shared with you in the Blackboard Discussion Forum: History Exam #1 Essay Prep

  1. Discuss and analyze the encounters between Indians and Europeans in colonial America. What effects did these encounters have upon Indians? How did John Rolfe attempt to deal with the situation? Why were whites so determined to expand in Virginia? How did whites justify their often-savage treatment of Indians? Explain. Use the lectures and the primary source documents by John Rolfe and John Underhill to compose a complete explanation.

  2. Examine the role of religion in colonial America, as exemplified in the Puritan experiment in Massachusetts and the First Great Awakening. Why did the Puritans come to the New World (make sure to discuss the general desire by England to establish colonies as well as the conditions specific to Puritans), what principles guided their actions, and what methods did they use in their efforts to establish Winthrop’s “City upon a hill?” What problems did the Puritans encounter? What did those associated with the Great Awakening seek to do, and how did they attempt to do it? How did followers of the Enlightenment respond? Use the lectures and the primary source document by Jonathan Edwards to provide a complete explanation.
