Today's Goal
Demonstrate competence of knowledge related to the learning community discipline(s) in a public forum.

Responsibility is fostered when writers are encouraged to engage and incorporate the ideas of others, giving credit to those ideas by using appropriate attribution.
Exam III Rolling Review
Take out your notes, readings, etc.

What can we add from Friday's lecture?

What can we add from today's lecture?

I want to remind you all that we are doing this to help you all review but also how to compile important information on your own for your exams. This is modeling one tool to help you prepare for things you will be doing in college. Please do not rely on these notes alone! This is meant to supplement your own notes from lecture, reading notes, and exam prep materials. If you are only working on learning the material in Seminar, you will more than likely be one of those who struggle on the final...
Exam III Prep
Since many people did not include the readings in their essay on Exam #2, we are going to try and remedy that problem!

As a group or on your own, work on creating reading statements for each of the following readings:
-
Alexis de Tocqueville Describes Slavery in America
-
Frederick Douglass Describes Life as a Slave
-
Dorothea Dix Describes Conditions of the Mentally Disabled
-
Harriet Beecher Stowe Explains Her Work as a Woman Writer
-
James Hammond Defends the Expansion of Slavery

For each reading statement, include the following:
-
Historical Significance?
-
Identification (who/what?)
-
What is the issue?
-
What groups are involved?
-
Who benefits from the issue?
-
Who is negatively affected by this issue?
-
-
Time period (when?)
-
Location (where?)
-
Significance (why is this important?)
-
What are 2-3 quotes from the reading that are significant?
-
Ideas to consider:
-
Did it cause something to happen? What resulted BECAUSE of it?
-
Is it an example of an activity that was going on? Does it represent an idea or practice of the time period? (In other words, what does it tell us about this time/place in American history?)
-
Was it the first/last time for something to occur in American history?
-
Was it something that failed, thus leading to another approach being taken?
-
-
-
Instead of rushing through this to be "done," actually take the time to develop your statements. Show me before you leave to receive credit! Don't be basic ya'll..
