B. Essay Questions 

  1. Assume that you are a Federalist during the latter stages of the John Adams administration. Explain your position on the interpretation of the constitution, the role of the government in the economy, taxation, the National Bank, and foreign policy. What actions have been taken to implement the goals of Alexander Hamilton and your party? Use materials from the lectures, the introductory sections on the chapters on "Federalists v. Republicans" and Neutrality and National Growth," the Alien and Sedition Acts, and the letter from Hamilton to Washington regarding the constitutionality of the National Bank to write a complete answer.

  1. Why did voter turnout increase so much between 1824 (the disputed election between Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, and William Crawford) and 1840 (William Henry Harrison's triumph). Explain this dramatic shift in voter behavior, making sure to discuss specific personalities, the key issues, political parties, and changing campaign techniques. Use the lectures, in introductory section on the chapter on "Jacksonian Democracy," and the primary source documents from Andrew Jackson, John Burnett, and John Ross to write a complete answer.

  • At this point in the term, you will begin shifting to New Research/Intersections Project where you will choose a topic that relates to the Key HIST 1301 themes that include notions of citizenship; war; power and oppression; resistance and revolt; equality, liberty, and order; and how writing has made things happen.

    • Professor Dre will allow some time in class to brainstorm, consider potential topics. Please feel free to come by if you would like guidance or to discuss potential avenues of research interests. We are here to help!

  • Planning Ahead for Spring 2020--Did you get all your appointments set by last Friday??

    • Make an appointment with your advisor to prepare for Spring 2020 class registration!
