History Exam Prep-Essays

Part A

  • Get into groups based on the letter I assign you!

Part B

  • Work on collaborating on the Google Doc I shared with you in the Blackboard Discussion Forum: History Exam #1 Essay Prep

  1. Although women in North America had little direct political power, they often influenced policy through indirect means. Use examples from the Iroquois Confederacy, the economic boycotts against British goods, writings by women against mistreatment of British officials and their supporters, and the correspondence between Abigail Adams and John Adams to support this argument. In doing so, make sure to use the lectures and the excerpts from the writings of Ann Hulton and the correspondence between Abigail and John Adams.

  2. Explain the independence movement in America. As you do so, make sure to discuss earlier turmoil in England and the colonies that encouraged the habit of self-rule, new British policies following the Treaty of Paris (1763), the issues which culminated in the Intolerable Acts, the rhetoric of Thomas Paine, and the principles reflected in the Declaration of Independence. Use the lectures, the excerpts from Paine’s Common Sense, and the introductory essay from the chapter, “The New Nation,” in A Documentary History of the United States to compose a complete explanation.
