Today's Goals

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate the ways in which they have become a more reflective (mindful, self-aware, thoughtful) writer.

Habits of Mind

  • Persistence is fostered when writers are encouraged to follow through, over time, to complete tasks, processes, or projects;

  • Metacognition is fostered when writers are encouraged to reflect on the texts that they have produced in a variety of contexts.

Key Terms

  • Reflection, metacognition, transfer/expansion

  • Research as Learning / Information Literacy

Warm Up

Although women in North America had little direct political power, they often influenced policy through indirect means. Use examples from the Iroquois Confederacy, the economic boycotts against British goods, writings by women against mistreatment of British officials and their supporters, and the correspondence between Abigail Adams and John Adams to support this argument. In doing so, make sure to use the lectures and the excerpts from the writings of Ann Hulton and the correspondence between Abigail and John Adams.

Connecting the Past and the Present Peer Review

Post a link to your IA draft in the Blackboard Discussion forum: Connecting the Past and the Present Draft. Be sure to provide the link with the editing feature.

Offer 2-3 pieces of well constructed feedback by using the "Comments" feature in Google Docs.  As you give feedback, be sure to follow the following guidelines:

  • Your feedback should be specific and actionable.

  • Moreover, your feedback should include a "because" clause, meaning you should always offer a clear reason for your suggestions/feedback.

  • Feedback should focus on "higher order" issues such as structure, developing examples, making connections to prior knowledge, and/or meeting the requirements of the letter.

  • Your feedback should help the author expand and explain their attempts to make meaning from the texts.

  • Avoid commenting on grammar and spelling, and avoid non-actionable comments like "make this clearer" or "This is good or bad," etc.

B. Possible Outline?

I. Rhetorical Situation

  • Go to the Assignments & Due Dates tab>Addressing Situations for how to address the situation

II. Historical Context

  1. Identification (who/what?)

  2. .Time period (when?)

  3. Location (where?)

  4. Significance (why is this important?)

The most difficult part of this (in my opinion) is the why, or the significance. There are lots of different ways a person or event (or concept) can be significant. Here are some questions to ask yourself when trying to figure out WHY something is significant:

  • Did it cause something to happen? What resulted BECAUSE of it?

  • Is it an example of an activity that was going on? Does it represent an idea or practice of the time period? (In other words, what does it tell us about this time/place in American history?)

  • Was it the first/last time for something to occur in American history?

  • Was it something that failed, thus leading to another approach being taken?

III. Contemporary Connection

  • Why should or shouldn't this be kept in the course readings for next semester?

  • In what ways do you see this being relevant to Gen Z experiences today?

  • What is a current conversation/event/movement in which you see this document connecting with today?

Use this rubric to help give feedback to the writer but also to think about your own letter.
