Warm Up

On your running document for Warm Up's, respond to the following:

  • Thinking of the themes: citizenship; war; power and oppression; resistance and revolt; equality, liberty, and order, and how writing makes things happen

    • What are you interested in?

    • What are you passionate about?

    • What pisses you off?

    • What are you interested in researching this semester?

If you are not sure to answer some of these, do not worry! That is why this week's Discovery Log is focused on this...

Discovery Log #4 Workshop

Spend the rest of class working on your Discovery Log based on the warm up you worked on today.

  • You can find any sources you like!

  • Be sure that you are interested in what you are researching! If you aren't then I don't want to see it...

  • If the themes are making you nervous, just start with something that you are interested but be sure to talk with me! I don't want you all to get too far then have to make some drastic changes.

Midterm Portfolio-Reflective Overview Peer Review

I will assign you a person to peer review! Take a look at their RO draft. When reading their work, consider the following questions:

  1. Where does the student answer the checklist questions?

  2. Where does the student explain the Learning Outcome?

  3. Where does the student offer examples to support their explanation? Does the student demonstrate how they have worked towards, struggled with, or accomplished the LO?

  4. Are these examples appropriate for the audience?

  5. Where does the student offer textual evidence for their interpretation of the texts LO and reading concepts (NWWK and Framework)?

  6. Where does the student explain how their textual evidence supports their interpretation? Does the writer explain the process of evidence and why or how it connects to the LO?

  7. What can the student write in order to fulfill the above requirements? Does the student use the RO template?

After you read their work, with these questions in mind, offer the student 3 pieces of feedback by replying to their thread in Blackboard. In the Subject line, type "RO PR." Your feedback should be specific and actionable.

Moreover, your feedback should include 3 "because clauses," meaning you should always offer a clear reason for your suggestions/feedback. Feedback should focus on "higher-order" issues such as structure, developing examples, making connections to prior knowledge, meeting the requirements of a standard response as is broken down by the 7 questions above.

Your feedback should help the author expand and explain their attempts to make meaning from the texts. Avoid commenting on grammar and spelling, and avoid non-actionable comments like "make this clearer," or "This is good/bad," etc.

Reflective Overview Tips-These are based on what I am seeing in the work of the students who have visited me..

  • Be sure that you are not repeating pieces of evidence unless you have an absolutely a valid reason!

  • Instead of just generally saying Reading Responses or Discovery Logs, point to specific ones. Which Discovery Log? Which Reading Response? Different entries can demonstrate different outcomes, habits of mind, key terms.

  • Be sure that you are connecting the habits of mind, key terms, and the readings to the Learning Outcome and the evidence you are providing!

  • Be sure that you are being metacongitive in your reflecting! Why were the choices you made appropriate or not? The cognitive aspect is describing what the assignment is, the purpose, audience, etc.

  • Be sure that you are discussing the purposes of the evidence.

  • Be sure that if you are including evidence from other courses, you are putting those into a folder in your Drive so that you may link to it!
