Seeing the World Complexly

Assignment Description: For this assignment, you and your group will expand on the work you are doing individually for the Intersections project. That expansion will include exploring the historical background of the issue you are examining and looking at how that issue affects life in South Texas in the present day.

The main goal for your group will be to produce a work product that 1) identifies the importance of the issue, 2) explains its historical background in the United States, 3) shows the ways that issue affects our region, and 4) advocates for a specific change that you believe would improve the lives of people in South Texas. Obviously, to achieve this goal, you’ll need to bring together insights and skills that you’ve gained in each of your connected LC courses.

As you approach this assignment, keep in mind our LC’s theme of seeing the world complexly. All too often when you hear about issues or problems in our world today, they are presented as black and white issues with obvious right and wrong answers. But the reality, of course, is that all of these issues have long and complicated histories and their solutions will likely require effort, understanding, trust, sacrifice, and buy-in from many different types of people and institutions.

Although this is a group product, success of the project will depend on your individual contributions as an active team member. LC instructors will assist you in completing this project and your grade for the group project will count in all of  your LC courses. For additional information, please reach out to your LC faculty.

Assignment Sequence Grades

  • Grouping

    • You will partake in a workshop where you will find a thread from the research you have been doing in your Discovery Logs and connect with at least 3-4 other people in the class. (4-5 people in a group)

  • Library Visit

    • In this library visit, you will find sources to support your Integrated Assignment. You will need to find primary source research as well.

  • Connection to South Texas (5%) - due in Writing & Rhetoric and Seminar March 27th

    • You will research the ways that your issue affects people in South Texas and the change you are seeking to effect.

    • Group the students (before they start connecting to South Texas)

  • 3rd Genre Presentation (5%)- due in Writing & Rhetoric April 15, April 17, and April 19

    • You will give an informal presentation in a Compinar with Writing & Rhetoric and Seminar. In the presentation, you will present a solid draft of your 3rd Genre to the class by covering the historical aspect you focused on, the change you are advocating for, and the rhetorical situation of the genre (purpose, audience, etc.)

      • You will need to include a primary source, covering the time period of history Dr. Costanzo covers, on the theme you are researching as a group. For individual contributions to the presentation, you will need to find 2-3 secondary sources. One should be your Foner textbook.

      • You will also need to provide a detailed outline/script for the entire group presentation.
